Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group announced a net profit of 248.6 billion yen ($1.62 billion) for the fourth quarter ending in December. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of gains. The profit was driven by an increase in the value of its investment in the artificial intelligence startup, OpenAI. This result is a stark contrast to a net loss of 369 billion yen recorded during the same period in the previous year. Over the nine months ending in December, investments in OpenAI yielded gains of 2.8 trillion yen for SoftBank. The group, led by billionaire Masayoshi Son, has now invested more than $30 billion in the company.
