This issue has poisoned relations between the two countries for decades. Trump stated that the members of these families 'have been searching for their loved ones for many years,' and that the United States 'stands fully with them' in their quest to find them. He also mentioned that he met with some of these family members during his visit to Tokyo on Monday. Trump's comments came ahead of his trip to Korea. After years of denial, North Korea admitted in 2002 that it had sent agents to abduct 13 Japanese people to use them in training spies in the Japanese language and customs.
