Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Japan, Kills Three

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Japan, about 500 kilometers west of the capital Tokyo. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake killed three people, including a nine-year-old girl, and injured around 300. The seismic event had its epicenter at a depth of 13 kilometers in Osaka Prefecture on the island of Honshu. Despite its intensity, no tsunami alert was issued. The JMA initially recorded the magnitude at 5.9, later revising it to 6.1. Public broadcaster NHK reported that a nine-year-old girl died in Osaka after a wall collapsed due to the strong tremor. Numerous buildings in Osaka and Takatsuki collapsed and caught fire, and several people were trapped. The earthquake caused the suspension of the bullet train service in the area, as did local rail services in the prefectures of Osaka, Shiga, Kyoto, and Nara. The Kansai Airport (Osaka) was temporarily closed while its runways were inspected.
