Green Tea May Reduce Dementia Risk

A new study from Japan suggests that regular consumption of green tea can significantly lower the risk of dementia in seniors, according to findings from nearly 9,000 adults.

Green Tea May Reduce Dementia Risk

The mechanism of dementia development involves damage or loss of nerve cells and connections in the brain. Symptoms depend on the affected areas in the brain and can manifest differently in various patients.

Recent research indicates a simple drink that significantly reduces the risk of developing dementia. According to the American newspaper "New York Post", this drink is green tea.

A Japanese study found that elderly people who regularly consume green tea have less damage to white matter in the brain, which is a key indicator of cognitive decline and dementia. In the research, which included about 9,000 adults, participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their drinking habits of coffee, tea, and other drinks, and the researchers used brain scans for data analysis.

Although the researchers did not find evidence that coffee consumption could prevent cognitive decline, the results showed that drinking green tea, especially three or more cups a day, may help in preventing dementia. These results prompt future studies that will demonstrate the positive effect of green tea on cognitive abilities.

Another recent study showed that consuming two or three cups of green tea a day significantly reduces the risk of cognitive decline, although no effects were observed after four or more cups.

Green tea plays a role in the low prevalence of dementia among elderly people on the Greek island of Ikaria. However, the benefits of this herbal remedy are not limited to just improving brain health.

Green tea is rich in antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties, protecting cells and reducing the risk of cancer and diabetes. Regular consumption of green tea is also associated with improved heart health, including lower cholesterol and arterial pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Research in 2023 showed that people who consume two to four cups of green tea a day have a 24% reduced risk of diabetes.
