In Japan, a record level of suicides among adolescents was recorded in 2024. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, the number of suicides among high school students (aged 11 and older) was 527 cases last year, compared to 513 cases in 2023.
The number of suicides among people under 20, including students, also decreased to 800 cases in 2024 compared to 810 in 2023, according to recent data.
"We take this issue seriously and will continue to do everything possible to implement the necessary measures to protect the lives of children and create a society where no one falls into a situation that forces them to commit suicide," noted the general secretary of the Ministry of Health, Kiziro Tatibana.
The total number of people of all ages who committed suicide decreased by 7.2% to 20,268 people, while the record high was 34,427 cases in 2003.
