6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 that struck the Chugoku region in western Japan today, followed by a series of strong aftershocks. The agency stated that the earthquake's epicenter was in the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture, noting the possibility of tsunami waves. The Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority announced that operations at the nuclear plant were not disrupted by the earthquake. A spokesperson for the authority said they are checking for any potential impact on Unit 2 of the plant, which has been operational since December 2024 after being shut down following the explosion at the Fukushima reactor in March 2011. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The intensity of the earthquake reached 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which has seven levels. Japan West Railway Company suspended Shinkansen bullet train services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata stations following the earthquake.
