Japan's Finance Minister, Katsunobu Kato, expressed concern over the imposition of tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China by the United States, announced by President Donald Trump. According to Kato, this measure could have an impact on the global economy, so his team is evaluating in detail the possible consequences on foreign exchange and U.S. monetary policy.
In 2022, trade between the United States and Japan reached $309 billion. In light of this situation, Kato explained that they are closely analyzing how this decision will affect Japan before determining the measures to take.
On the other hand, it was announced that President Trump will host Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the White House next week. The meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 7. Ishiba aims to build a mutually beneficial relationship and strengthen the security alliance between the two countries by addressing issues such as security cooperation and prospects for the Pacific.
During the summit, discussions are expected to focus on the tariff policy of the Trump Administration, the blocking of Nippon Steel's acquisition of the steelmaker United States Steel, and other important matters for both nations.
