Carlos Slim Wins $300M Contract in Japan

Mexican businessman Carlos Slim has accelerated his business in Asia just days after calling on the country's entrepreneurs to invest more. His Spanish construction firm, FCC, has secured a contract to renovate and operate a water treatment plant in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, about 300 km west of Tokyo. The contract is worth over 300 million dollars. The plant, which dates back to 1967, will be upgraded to treat 80,000 cubic meters of water per day. This contract is unique due to its hybrid model, combining a build-and-transfer scheme with a concession, which is a novelty in Japan. This success not only serves as a reference for bidding on other projects but also allows Slim, who has been investing in Japan since 2019, to enter a strategic sector. Recall that two weeks ago, Slim stated that for Mexico to grow again, it is necessary for entrepreneurs to invest around 25% of the country's GDP.
