Japanese Truck Driver Wins Lawsuit Against Hospital That Swapped Him at Birth

A bankrupt Japanese truck driver discovered he was not raised in his real family but was swapped with another baby immediately after his birth. His biological roots trace back to a wealthy Japanese family. His adoptive father passed away when he was two years old. He grew up in a poor house lacking basic amenities and had to start working at a young age to help his family while struggling to finish high school. His adoptive mother and neighbors often said he didn't resemble his parents at all, leading him to live with constant internal questioning about his true origins. In contrast, the child who took his place grew up in a wealthy family, received an elite education, and later became the head of a successful company, while his three younger siblings enjoyed a life of luxury and privilege. When the truck driver discovered the painful truth, his biological parents had already passed away, deepening his sense of sorrow. After their mother's death, the eldest brother took control of his father's inheritance, promising to care for his younger siblings, but he broke his promise and sent them to an orphanage. Over time, the younger siblings began to notice that their eldest brother didn't resemble them in appearance or features. They recalled their late mother had once told them that the clothes of their first child changed after a nurse took him to the hospital's bath immediately after his birth. These doubts led them to conduct a DNA analysis in 2009 after collecting a cigarette butt from their brother to verify his biological identity. Judge Masatoshi Miyasaka, who issued the ruling, stated that the court supported the truck driver's claim because he was 'deprived of his biological parents from the moment of his birth and was never given the opportunity to meet them.' He affirmed that he deserved compensation as he was supposed to live in a comfortable and financially prosperous environment. In November 2013, a court in Tokyo ordered the San-Ikukai hospital in the Sumida ward to pay $250,000 in damages for a grave error made in 1953 when the newborn was accidentally switched with another baby just moments after birth.
