SoftBank Reports Surprise 2.5 Trillion Yen Profit

The unexpected gains from its startup investment unit in the Vision Fund helped SoftBank report a surprise net profit of 2.5 trillion yen ($16.2 billion) in the second fiscal quarter, far surpassing analyst estimates of 418.2 billion yen. The Tokyo-based company had increased its stake in NVIDIA to about $3 billion by the end of March. SoftBank Corp sold its entire stake in Nvidia Corp for $5.8 billion, which came before a series of planned investments by founder Masayoshi Son to build his own sphere of influence to support artificial intelligence.
