This weekend, the third round of the 2026 Formula 1 season takes place at the legendary Suzuka Circuit, which hosts the Japanese Grand Prix over three days. Today, the qualifying session is underway. The session is scheduled to last one hour, provided no yellow flags or incidents occur. The Suzuka Circuit, known for its figure-eight layout, is one of the most challenging for drivers. It features winding 'S' corners, demanding Degner turns, and the iconic 130R. The track requires great precision and causes high tire degradation. After a difficult start to the season, Mexican driver Sergio 'Checo' Pérez is looking to secure a top position. During the free practice sessions, he had contact with Alex Albon of Williams Racing, damaging both his Cadillac and the Thai driver's car. Meanwhile, Mercedes continues to dominate, with George Russell—current leader of the Constructors' Championship—and Kimi Antonelli setting the fastest times. However, Oscar Piastri of McLaren has been the surprise, posting the fastest time in the second free practice session after a challenging start to the season that included two retirements at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. The qualifying session for the Japanese Grand Prix will be broadcast live in Mexico; however, due to the time difference, it will be aired late at night. The race is set for 53 laps and has a total length of 5.807 km. Currently, the fastest lap record belongs to Kimi Antonelli, who last year set a time of 1:30.965.
