Strong Earthquake Hits Western Japan

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5 struck western Japan on Tuesday, but there was no risk of a tsunami. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake, which had an initial magnitude of 6.2, occurred in Shimane Prefecture in northwest Japan. The capital of the prefecture, Matsue, and neighboring cities, including some in the neighboring Tottori Prefecture, experienced the strongest tremors. The source explained that the earthquake's epicenter was about 10 kilometers inland, indicating no tsunami risk. There were no immediate reports of injuries or material damage from the earthquake. The Nuclear Regulatory Authority stated that no malfunctions were found at the Shimane nuclear power plant or related facilities in the region. Japan lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most earthquake-prone areas. The Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Japan announced that the plant's operations were not disrupted by the earthquake. A spokesperson for the agency said they are checking for any potential impact on Unit 2 of the plant, which has been operational since December 2024 after being shut down following the Fukushima reactor explosion in March 2011.
