Bus Driver Loses Pension for Stealing Fare

An employee of the public transport agency Kiyoto Shinichi stated to the France-Presse agency: "Each bus driver works alone, having to deal with public funds." At the beginning of the month, the Supreme Court of Japan overturned the initial decision, indicating that his behavior could undermine public trust in the system. According to the newspaper 'Mainichi', the office of public transport in Kiyoto approved the decision of the Supreme Court.

When confronted with the incident, the man denied his responsibility, but in the end was dismissed and deprived of his pension fund in the amount of more than 12 million yen. The bus driver filed a lawsuit in the city of Kiyoto, demanding to receive his pension in the amount of 12 million yen (84 thousand US dollars) due to the stolen dollars. The initial court ruling turned out to be not in his favor, but the appellate court overturned this decision, considering that the accusation was unprecedented.

Shinichi emphasized: "If we do not strictly follow our procedures, our organization may be undermined, which can lead to a breakdown in public trust. We took this question about the thefts in our work very seriously". A respected Japanese bus driver with 29 years of experience lost his pension in the amount of 84 thousand dollars after he was caught stealing 7 dollars from the passenger fare. In 2022, during the inspection of video recordings from video recorders, employees of the municipal transport administration of Kiyoto noted that one of the drivers of municipal buses in Japan stole a banknote nominally worth 1000 yen, instead of putting it in the cash register of payment collection, according to established procedures.
